My mother had many of her poems published in the local paper during the years she raised us ten kids. I am proud to share them with you now. She is currently a widow after 52 years of marriage!

My Wheelchair Friend

It's been a long time for this close friend of mine...

To be pushed out with the birds and bees,

And to sit in the summer shade 'neath the trees.

What a wonderful thing to behold,

The smell of air while flowers unfold,

And to see many people dining outside

Under a clear sky with a silver lining.

The touch of a cool breeze helps make the day close with comfortable ease

It only took a little determination and caring from a friend who believes in charing

Who brings more lightness to the day,

Being brought among the treasures of God's way.

What a glorious thing...

A true pal can bring.

The Peace of Dawn

In the quiet peace of dawn,

The morning dew glistens on the lawn

As sunlight begins over the trees

We hear the pleasant song of birds and bees

If the weather is very fair,

We can smell the sweet scent of fresh air.

Now is the time to give thanks, ponder, and pray a bit,

To help us reach the worthwhile summit.

HA...low...ee...n!

Multi-colored fallen leaves rustle,

While children hustle and bustle;

All perky and bright,

On "Trick or Treat" night.

Black cats scramble,

In a clear preamble.

Owls go ahooting.

Couples go out in a pair,

All of them elsewhere!

Pumpkins seem to stare

While big and little kids try out dares;

When getting candy or making scares.

The gnome comes out of his home,

And is now not completely alone,

Gossameers, Goblins, Gremlins & Ghosts

Now play as eerie hosts!

Bats hovering over houses and barns,

Will do little or no harm;

But simply do alarm!

Do witches on brooms fly.

Across a moonlit sky?...

After concocting a brew,

That is an odd kind of stew?

The best of this happy bright night,

Is when all treats are laid out in sight...

After seeing most of good friends,

Before this exciting evening ends!

Air Pollution

Published in the Canton Journal on February 19, 1981

When you sneeze and cough,

Just before you stop...

Look around to see what you've got,

It may be the dust in your room...

Or rubbish thrown by a careless goon.

The time keeper you've bought...

No less than your own clock,

May seem to rapidly tick tock-

When car exhaust pipe pollution,

Is certainly not the solution,

Nor smoking which could send

you to an 'institution'...

With bronchitis, emphysema or cancer

Good cleanliness and concern is the answer!

Foul factory smoke...

Can almost make you choke

These are surely my pet peeves,

That stinks the air we breathe

Every little bit helps

When you take care of yourself!
