When a catholic doesn't feel connected to God- what to do
69Hi! It is often after difficult times that I feel close to God more than usual; it's sort of like picking myself up or being picked up by His grace. I still don't feel completely connected to God, that would require prayer, possibly singing hymns, and thinking about God. So, this hub is about spiritual slumps- the times we feel like ehhhhhh and don't remember how to pick ourselves up with God.
Saint Therese , called the greatest saint of modern times, said she often felt deserted by God as if He had distanced himself from her. She said she realized He was testing her to see if she had the faith to still trust Him. Why would God test us? Isn't our whole lives a test?
The Crucifixion
On the cross, Jesus said "Father (Abba) Father, Why hast thou forsaken me?" These are my three theories:
- Jesus had to feel abandonment from God in order to be an example for us who would later feel it. He had suffered every possible thing we suffer, more so, so it would make sense he's suffer this too.
- God the father could have looked away for a moment, not being able to look at His adorable Son be so terribly tortured. Especially having infinite love.
- Jesus was weak and dying and may have in his pain and sate of mind temporarily doubted God. In the Garden of Gethsemane, he shook with fear of the upcoming torture.
Ave Maria Celine Dion
Spectatular Prayers
I try and pray when I feel spiritually dry. Let God know everything: your fears, your sadness, your anger, your joy, thank Him for the blessings. We are supposed to talk to Jesus and God as our Father and friend, trusting in Him that He will help. You will everytime feel soothed and comforted and start noticing good things in your life.
I've been told that Jesus just loves hearing from us and talking to him will allow Him to talk back to us in formes of inspiration and "ideas" we suddenly have.
Oh Jesus
In Union with your most precious blood poured out on the cross for us
and offered in every Mass, I offer you today
all my prayers, works, joys, sorrows, sufferings for the praise
of your Holy Name
for all the desires of Your Sacred Heart
In Union with all Christians
and our final union with you in Heaven.
Amen.

I feel that since Christmas time is nearing, it would be good to hear Ave Maria and perhaps purchase some Christmas music or beautiful hymns in general.

Very sweet. Your heart for God shines in this!
schoolgirl: There is no such thing as a spiritual slump. As spirit beings we experience no feelings of up or down, for as a spirit these do not exist. As humans we might experience melancholy or sadness or other like feelings, but these are physcologically induced feelings that our human forms experience, never our spiritual selves.
Brother Dave.
I think I know what you meant by spiritual slump. We have our dry times when God seems far away, or even non-exsistant. We hunger and thirst for him as in a dry and weary land. There are times this happens and we don't see the how or the why. Other times it happens because of sin in our lives as Dave pointed out.
I would add to your list that God took his eyes off Jesus for a brief time because he could not bear to look at the sins of the world that his dear son bore on that cross.
I also believe that when Jesus was in the garden, he was indeed agonizing what he would physically go through, but I think it stands to reason as well that he was agonizing over bearing the sins of the whole world. That he would be punished for our sins. But, Glory, because he loved us, and because he loved the Father and put the Father's will before his own, he went to the cross anyway, willingly. PTL! Thanks for another great thought provoking hub.

Dear schoolgirl-You have really brought comfort and inspiration to me with your wonderful hub. Thanks for reminding me to talk to God more as he is just waiting for his children to speak to him. I love the Ava Maria video. I fell in love with this song as a young girl in catholic school. I felt the love of God and Mother Mary so strongly when I heard it. Thanks again for a lovely hub to end my day. God Bless:)
