Does Spending Large Amounts Of Time Online Have Negative Consequences?

Updated on July 5, 2013

Does a red blaring siren ever go off in your head or am I just the only one feeling isolated and overcome by the technology age we live in? When I was a kid, and that was in the early 80's, I remember going outside to play with the neighborhood kids, all kinds of games; there were hockey games going on in my neighborhood and you had to move out of the way when a car came by.....I know I'm not old and I know people born in the 50's can say even more (or the twenties, thirties, etc etc), but PLEASE! I'm 35 and even I remember what it was like---much Saner!

The Rise of Video Games

Video Games were just coming out when I was young. I mean I liked Mario Brothers yeah, but my brother had it and it wasn't all he did, he played football too, it was just a temporary thing. Now a days (I hear) young kids play all day on these games, giving only their thumbs exercise, (Whew!) I mean how sad is the fact so many children are obese today?

Television

With 500+ channels available on Comcast today, and young people also staying in as well as older people to watch all kinds of tv shows and movies; it's endless how much time we can spend sitting on our arses.

Computers- the most likely villian of them all!

The Computer had got to be THE MOST used technological tool invented, I will say there are good things, and it's a double edged sword, wouldn't you say? But personally, I'd rather go back in time, as much as I LOVE hubpages, I really think life would be alot healthier without all this technology. Why?

  • It's easy to forget to MOVE. Or to exercise. We had to "plan" our exercise.....Old jobs that came before the abundance of office work made us move our muscles....
  • We live in a world where we don't SEE people anymore: we "talk" to them online, on the phone, texting, im messaging......
  • Where is this all going? The rise of mental illness and stress; are they somehow connected?
  • People don't say "hi" hardly on the street anymore
  • We are texting while driving......

I feel very isolated at times in this world of ours. I wish I had a job other than hubpages where I could see people face to face, sure I do at the supermarket and at my volunteer job, butttt....

Let's focus on the evident Isolation

I think everyone, (I know) is becoming more isolated. You've got "kid play dates" a man tells me the other day in the gym. Yes, planned play dates and the kids never learn to deal with the difficult kids he says, that we all come across in the world. This also alienates the difficult kids, the disabled kids, the different kids. Right?

Sometimes I go out and come home and find myself (addicted to my computer...I seriously had withdrawl before)...have to check my email, my hubpages, my facebook at least. After spending hours online, then I watch tv and (no, I don't play videogames.)

Isolation

I mean how many people today, how many kids do you see playing on the street? In my neighborhood--usually NONE. Even parents usually are not outside...why? (computer,tv,videogames?) That must be it, right? They can't all be hiding in their houses, afraid to face thier neighbors?

How helpful is it really to lead lives where we don't see people face to face? Are we becoming like the space age or something or that movie -which one- where the people are so fat they can't walk? Right now I'm ignoring my cat as I type this.....How many kids get ignored? I think you get the picture. In my opinion, technology is not worth it.

What's your opinion? Do you agree with any or all of this or most? Do tell.

Do we spend too much time on technology such as tv, computers, etc?
